About Brazeau Collieries Mine National Historic Site
Almost all of the processing plant buildings of the Brazeau Collieries coal mine are still standing and the area is now designated a National Historic Site of Canada. Clearwater County manages the museums and mine site continuing the work of the Nordegg Historical Society in the restoration of the mine site structures and interpretation of the site to the public. A trail system has been constructed through the mine site to allow for guided walking and ride along tours (for those with mobility issues, these must be pre-booked).
About Crescent Falls
Crescent Falls features two cascading waterfalls in a crescent shaped canyon. Access is directly at the waterfalls or via a scenic hike from the first viewpoint along the top of the canyon to the spectacular waterfalls. Powerful water and rainbows are surrounded by spectacular scenery.
Road with obvious signage which leads into Crescent Falls is southwest from Nordegg, or by a longer drive east and north past Abraham Lake from Saskatchewan Crossing along the Icefields Parkway. Access to the tiny park begins from an intersection onto the narrow and gravel Crescent Falls Campground Road. About 3 KM (1⅞ miles) along twisting road, through the forest, is a viewpoint offering a spectacular glimpse into Bighorn Gorge hosting Bighorn River.
There is a trailhead here which tracks the top of the Bighorn Canyon. The hike along the top of the canyon is worth the time for dramatic long views of Crescent Falls.
Photography Tip: Early morning light makes contrast challenging for photography.
